Decide which products need barcodes
Many packaged products already have barcodes, while private-label or unlabelled products may need store-generated codes. Keep the rule consistent so staff know which identifier to scan.
Clean the product catalogue first
A scanner can only retrieve accurate data if the product record is accurate. Remove duplicates and confirm selling prices, units and categories before printing large batches of labels.
Test scanner compatibility
Most barcode scanners behave like keyboard input, but hardware should still be tested with the exact POS screen and device used at checkout.
Design a receiving process
Barcode accuracy depends on what happens when stock arrives. Staff should know when to create a new product, when to reuse an existing code and how to record purchases.
Audit exceptions
Track items that fail to scan, duplicate codes and manual price overrides. Fixing those exceptions prevents the barcode system from slowly becoming unreliable.
